Pilates is a method of exercise that stretches and strengthens the body with particular focus on the deep core/postural muscles. Movements are linked together with smooth transitions and muscles are never isolated but rather the entire body moves in unison calling for inner strength from the deep muscles that support the bones. The Pilates equipment is designed to offer more support and resistance in order to bring the Pilates Mat work to the next level, which requires a great deal of mind-body connection.
Available on the GYROTONIC® pulley tower, the GYROTONIC® system stretches and strengthens muscles while stimulating connective tissues in and around the joints of the body, increasing range of motion and coordination. Exercises, synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, enhance aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promote neuromuscular rejuvenation. Unique to the GYROTONIC® system are the circular, spiraling, and undulating movements that increase the functional capacity of the spine and create a spherical and three-dimensional awareness, resulting in total equilibrium.

Pilates Classes
As part of the Pilates Studio at the Vail Athletic Club, the following classes are offered with membership, a daily fee or punchcard entry.
GYROKINESIS®
Exercises are the root of the GYROTONIC® work but are practiced while seated on a stool or mat. GYROKINESIS® exercises allow one to work on the entire body through seven natural elements of spinal movement: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist, and circular, as well as all other joint articulation. This approach systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movements. These movements stimulate the body's internal organs while different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated along with the movements.
Pilates Mat
A mixed-level classical practice that incorporates all of the fundamental Pilates principles including control, centering, concentration, precision, alignment, balance, breath, and rhythm/flow. Exercises are taught in their traditional order and form, with modifications provided as necessary.
