Family Friendly Winter Activities in Vail

 In Vail Experience

Vail may be known for world-class skiing, but it’s equally as known for activities off the slopes.  Craving excitement and thrill?  Try snowmobiling at Camp Hale.  Seeking peace and quiet?  Visit the Vail Nordic Center for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.  Whatever you want to experience this winter, our concierge team can help you make your vacation in Vail the best yet!

20 miles south of Vail sits Camp Hale which was the 10th Mountain Division training area from World War II.  Nova Guides operates at this location offering snowmobile tours for half or full day excursions. At 12,500 feet, you’ll enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of 4 mountain ranges including the Continental Divide. Unsure about the experience? Don’t worry, the trails are well maintained and you can ride with a buddy or take it slow up the mountain. Children 9 and up can be a passenger and children 14 and up can be a driver.

Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing
Located 1.1 miles east of our lodge, Nordic skiers and snowshoers can access approximately 8-10 miles of snowshoe and cross-country ski trails with spectacular views of the Gore Mountain Range. Rentals are available or you can bring your own gear and pay a nominal daily fee. This year they have also introduced Fat Bikes rentals which are mountain bikes made for riding on the snow. You will feel like a kid again while pedaling along the trails and getting a bonus workout in! Be sure to make a day of it and grab a bite to eat at The Grill on the Gore before you leave.

Gourmet dining meets bowling at Bol in Vail. This family-friendly and contemporary bowling alley offers a unique experience for your entire family. Bol is located a short walk away from Vail Mountain Lodge at the Solaris and includes a full bar and restaurant. Don’t miss the tuna poke, burger, and flatbreads.

Ice Skating
The Solaris Ice Rink located in the heart of Vail Village is open for afternoon and evenings for your skating pleasure.  Ice skate rentals are available on site. For those who want to spectate, grab a warm beverage at Yeti’s Grind or a refreshing beer at Vail Brewing Company with seating overlooking the ice rink.

Adventure Ridge
Start with a scenic gondola ride to the top of Vail Mountain. Experience a thrilling zip line, tubing hill, kid’s snowmobiles, snow bikes, and a mountain coaster, Adventure Ridge has activities for everyone in your family.  Take the in-town bus over to Lionshead to the Eagle Bahn Gondola and make a day event with lunch at Bistro 14 at Eagle’s Nest (the top of the gondola).
